The newer (pre3 at the least) versions of mplayer have a command "osd_show_text" in the slave mode...
for example: osd_show_text "New Mail Arrived!" would show "New Mail Arrived!" in the top corner of the screen. I don't have any plans to use it for new mail :) but it might be nice to build a simple OSD into, for example, the mplayer TV plugins... Or, for example, hitting 'guide' when playing a movie could show the IMDB title, or something like that.
