I also tried creating an own skin one day, but found it too difficult.
The idea of a graphical skin designer is a quite obvious one, and I think that 
would be a potential task for a newbie (that could even be done with Java or 
whatever language).

However, there are certain important obstacles:
1. The Freevo GUI stuff must be stable enough to support the skin format (or a 
similar one) in the future, too.
2. It would be nice if the preview would be as close as possible to what 
Freevo displays, which would be much easier to accomplish by having Freevo's 
engine render the skin AFAICS.

However, just defining the on-screen areas visually would already be helpful 
IMHO, maybe a minimal XML-capable, rectangular-objects-rendering designer 
would be sufficient for that.
