As for perceptions, I've lived in many places and am now in Florida, USA. Here, as with several of the other places I've lived, there's a lot of bad perception about Linux users and other things "non-mainstream." It's the old "we don't like what we don't understand so we'll hate it rather than try to understand it" thing around here. My experiences are limited, to be sure.
