For what it's worth, I was about to reproduce that _utils problem.  I
just haven't had a chance to sort it out yet.

I would like to ensure kaa.base is compatible with Python 2.5.

But for the rest of Kaa, and Freevo for that matter, I'm inclined to
agree that Python 2.6 should be the minimal required version.  It's
fairer to the users (since Python 2.5 testing does not get much
coverage, as you saw) and it's more likely to work.  It's been out since
2008 so I don't think it's unreasonable to require it.
