I have used Nvidia all along in framebuffer and have had no problems (except with Fedora 3 when it first came out with the udev system). You have to install the nvidia driver, but the tv-out works great. I have used GeForce4 in the past. My most recent machine is the FX5200 128m version that I picked up for around $60.
