Well, mainly, you can use a different encoder. I prefer mp1e because
it's faster on my machine, supports v4l2 and outputs mpeg. Mpeg and
avi differ in that you can seek through an mpeg file even while it's
recording, so I can watch something while I'm recording it.

AVI supports more encoders though, so you can use divx which is
apparently smaller.
