That would likely be the biggest problem; from what I understand, the
Tivo doesn't have a very powerful processor, but offload the heavy
lifting of mpeg encoding to a dedicated card. Without information on
how that card works, it would be very difficult to make a good
replacement.

That said, I imagine the hardest part (a driver for the card) is
probably on the Tivo already in the form of a module, but the rest
would still need work.

I can't speak for everyone, but I never thought about it, simply
because off the shelf hardware is easier to find than an abandoned
Tivo.
