Look in the error log (internal-main-?.log) and look for a line like this: ChildApp.__init__(), pid=21123, app=./runapp --prio=-19 /usr/bin/mplayer -nolirc -screenw 768 -screenh 576 -fs -slave -ao oss:/dev/dsp -nocache -v -vo mga "/media/Movies/MyMovie.avi" , poll=-1
Cut and paste everything from /usr/bin/mplayer to the filename. Yours will look a little different obviously. Run that command from the command-line. i.e. /usr/bin/mplayer -nolirc -screenw 768 -screenh 576 -fs -slave -ao oss:/dev/dsp -nocache -v -vo mga "/media/Movies/MyMovie.avi" And watch for any errors from mplayer. Something in this specific part is failing for you, likely to either be the video output or sound output device...
