Mine are mounted via a NFS share. I haven't tried local mp3s yet, since I hadn't been thinking that this was the problem, but I'm running out of ideas.
Also, is xmms working in the current pre4, or is it not? The documentatino was kind of ambiguous. Also, if it is working, are there any plugins that will have a similar "interface" where it shows the tag info and the album cover, or am I stuck with geiss-like stuff?

some investigation shows that mplayer is segfaulting when loading the mp3s.
That would be it. Freevo calls mplayer, mplayer segfaults and returns control to Freevo; the problem is probably confined to mplayer.
I tried both with the runtime mplayer, and one I created myself. However, the one I created myself had dxr3 support, as does the runtime one. I haven't tried with one that does not have dxr3 support...that _could_ be the issue.
Worth looking at, though I can't see why the DXR3 support would crash unless it uses some libraries on your machine that don't match those it was built with.
