Ok not 100% sure about this but I've just tried playing an mpeg 1 file thru mplayer on a remote shell (not sure if doing it this way will work but I can't see why not - even though I can't physically see the output :-).

tried mplayer -vo dxr3 -ao oss://em8300_ma-0 test.mpg

and mplayer -vo dxr3 test.mpg

But mplayer complains that it can't open the device...
==================================
Playing test.mpg
MPEG-ES file format detected.
VIDEO:  MPEG1  160x120  (aspect 1)  25.00 fps  409.6 kbps (51.2 kbyte/s)
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

Exiting... (End of file) ================================== This is the a version of mplayer that I compliled for dxr3 support - followed the docs and it all seemed ok, dxr3 support was listed.

I'm stumped...

...if your trying to run mplayer from a remote shell, you need to use the 'display' option

try:

mplayer -vo dxr3 -display localhost:0.0 -ao oss://em8300_ma-0 test.mpg

or something like that.

cheers,

rohbags.
