where are you pressing record? when you are watching tv? then it will never work as you MUST press record when you are in the tv guide on the item you want to record.
mencoder is not included with freevo 1.3.4 you need to download and use the 0.91 version of mplayer and install it over the version 1.0 of mplayer. more information is needed. please explain exactly what you see on the screen and exactly what key you are pressing to do what function when it fails. are you using framebuffer?
