I added the following line to /etc/freevo/local_conf.py:
MPLAYER_VO_DEV = 'vo xv,x11'
And my MPLAYER_ARGS_DEV is now:
MPLAYER_ARGS_DEV = (('-ac mad, -autosync 100 -nolirc -autoq 100 -screenw
1024 -screenh 768 -zoom'))
My MPG video displays well.
