Have been using freevo for a while but haven't been paying proper attention to the list for a while. The subject I'm enquiring about may therefore already have been discussed, but anyway here goes.
Has anyone implemented a practical way of handing all the various source aspect ratios in the freevo sourcetree yet? This may be a non-issue for most or it may be a common gripe, but personally I find it very dissatisfying to watch for instance a 2.35 letterboxed movie played back on my 16:9 widescreen with 30% streching horizontally and 30% less screen estate vertically than the proper playback mode. Some TVs do correct this automatically (semi-intelligently) but mine isn't one of those unfortunately.
I do of course realise that it's almost impossible to recognize the proper aspect ratio within freevo - many of the formats being used haven't even got a field for this value - what I'm looking for (or asking for? one can always hope..) is a python script that will either read a predefined aspec ratio from a supplied dotfile or whatnot or by a keypress on the remote or keyboard that will feed mplayer with the correct parameter.
Whilst experimenting on my own I've found that you get excellent results with mplayer by cropping the source frame vertically and then stretching it back to full size, using the builtin resize filter that does a pretty good job of interpolating the missing lines. There are really only a few possible combos of source aspect and letterboxing, so a predefined list of parameters to feed mplayer would be just fine, as long as there was a way of easily doing this during or before playback.
Does anyone have a good take on this particular problem they'd like to share?
Cheers,
Ole Andre
