alsa is fine, but it needs some adjustments to your VCR_CMD

here's my VCR_CMD:

VCR_CMD = ('%(mencoder)s' +
           ' tv://%(channel)s' +
           ' -tv driver=v4l:input=0' +
           ':norm=%(tv_norm)s' +
           ':chanlist=%(chanlist)s' +
           ':width=%(width)s:height=%(height)s' +
           ':outfmt=yv12' +
           ':device=/dev/video0' +
           ':alsa:forceaudio:forcechan=2:amode=1' +
           ':buffersize=64' +
           ' -ovc lavc' +
           ' -lavcopts' +
           ' vcodec=mpeg4' +
           ':vbitrate=1200' +
           ':keyint=25' +
           ' -oac mp3lame' +
           ' -lameopts' +
           ' br=128:cbr:mode=3' +
           ' -endpos %(seconds)s' +
           ' -o %(filename)s.avi')

I haven't used it for a while, and iirc I tweaked the source a little.
So some of the variables (like 'width' and 'height') will give you
runtime errors if you don't change it to proper values.
Anyway, the important thing is the "alsa" option.
