alsa is fine, but it needs some adjustments to your VCR_CMD
here's my VCR_CMD:
VCR_CMD = ('%(mencoder)s' +
' tv://%(channel)s' +
' -tv driver=v4l:input=0' +
':norm=%(tv_norm)s' +
':chanlist=%(chanlist)s' +
':width=%(width)s:height=%(height)s' +
':outfmt=yv12' +
':device=/dev/video0' +
':alsa:forceaudio:forcechan=2:amode=1' +
':buffersize=64' +
' -ovc lavc' +
' -lavcopts' +
' vcodec=mpeg4' +
':vbitrate=1200' +
':keyint=25' +
' -oac mp3lame' +
' -lameopts' +
' br=128:cbr:mode=3' +
' -endpos %(seconds)s' +
' -o %(filename)s.avi')
I haven't used it for a while, and iirc I tweaked the source a little.
So some of the variables (like 'width' and 'height') will give you
runtime errors if you don't change it to proper values.
Anyway, the important thing is the "alsa" option.

=================================
Thanks for the reply.
I changed my commands to look as follows, but I get
some errors.
encoder -tv
on:driver=v4l:input=0:norm=NTSC:channel=38:chanlist=us-cable:width=640:height=480:outfmt=yv12:device=/dev/video0:alsa:forceaudio:forcechan=2:amode=1:audiorate=44100:forceaudio:forcechan=1:buffersize=64
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1200:keyint=30 -oac mp3lame -lameopts
br=128:cbr:mode=3 -ffourcc divx -endpos 5 -o blah.avi
Here are the errors:
MEncoder 0.91-RPM-3.1 (C) 2000-2003 MPlayer Team
CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Athlon 4 PM Palomino/Athlon MP Multiprocessor/Athlon XP
eXtreme Performance (Family: 6, Stepping: 2)

So, I am apparently using alsa incorrectly. Can anyone
give me a little direction.
TIA,
Mike
