I think the answer to the question is the manual recording option that lets you record at a certain time/day combination. You give up favorites though. Also, the TV guide works fine without channel data AFAIK. You can select a chan and it will give you that channel - though this may not be the case with the new autodetection of channels (which you may be able to override in the local_config.py).
