I'm using an ATI video card.  But I figured out the problem.  I just needed to select a specific VESA mode at bootup -- I suppose to get more colors (bpp) in the framebuffer.  The default must only get 16 colors or something.   I'd still like to find out why I'm unable to run Freevo as a non-root user, though.   Brad
