I'm using an ATI video card. But I figured out the problem. I just needed to select a specific VESA mode at bootup -- I suppose to get more colors (bpp) in the framebuffer. The default must only get 16 colors or something.
I'd still like to find out why I'm unable to run Freevo as a non-root user, though.
Access to the framebuffer is not enabled for normal users on most systems.
Make a new group, and allow that group to write to the framebuffer (or more unsafe, run freevo as suid root).
If you're looking for TV-out with ATI a tool called atitvout might be worth looking into.
