What is the LOCAL_CONF_VERSON in freevo_config.py? In regards to sound, you need to either install alsa (build in to the new 2.6 kernels), or use OSS.
Alsa is probably the better option as this is the way things are moving in general. I would suggest getting aplay to work before doing anything else. The alsa webpages are pretty good for getting things installed.
