I have read about the issue with non-Latin1 filenames,
and, yes, ru_RU.UTF-8 filenames are shown as garbage.
It would be great if you fix this. 

But I feel I'm missing something here. I tried to
change menu items (I believe in the skin, and also in
the VIDEO_ITEMS parameter, where I have assigned the
first parameter to a string in Russian. The second
parameter - directory path, was still Latin). And I
have seen the same garbage on the screen.

I have found a message in the developers list from a
guy, who successfully displayed Chinese messages with
the help of FREEVO_LOCALE setting. I expected to be
able to do the same with Russian. 

I tried with both 1.4.1 and CVS version as of Monday. 

So, if menus and filenames are the same problem,
you'll probably fix both. But I'm not quite sure there
is no problem on my side also...
