I had that problem with Mplayer when I upgraded my alsa drivers to 1.x  So,
if you're using 1.x alsa drivers, use:

MPLAYER_AO_DEV       = 'alsa1x'  # e.g.: oss,sdl,alsa, see mplayer docs
