I have two DXR3's that I'm doing nothing at all with. One of them, I
even attached a very slim laptop style cpu cooler to the EM8300 because
it was overheating. They will pass AC3, and the mpeg output is quite good,
but my freevo aspirations are broader than mpeg.

Analog out is also excellent on the dxr3. I actually have thought about
just using one as a sound card.

I *do have an amp to receive AC3 streams, but i haven't yet tackled
that. Currently my freevo system is a VIAC3, but so far i haven't found a
way to get it to transmit anything but 48khz PCM.

   That's nothing!

Up until about 18 months ago, I had, running through my wall:

Power (from the big UPS), PS/2 KB and mouse, TWO scsi cables, Two sets
of composite A/V cables, VGA, and Ethernet.

Because i wanted the cd burner, monitor, keyboard, and mouse for one of
my computers in the bedroom, and leave the noisy stuff in the other room.
A/V cables were for the stereo, vcr, etc. Ethernet was for my laptop,
should i want to plug it in. The other scsi cable was hanging off another
scsi bus, because i was too chicken to hot-plug scsi on the live bus when i
wanted to attach another device.

In a few weeks i hope to reimplement - no scsi, kb/mouse/vga on *longer
cables this time, one a/v, and one firewire.

I'm unsure how much sympathy i should have for the OP. Some people have
these troubleshooting methodologies that just guarantee failure. The
recording "with sound" bit reminds me of some old threads. It's not that
hard of a concept - either your bt8xx card has implemented the on-chip ADC,
or it hasn't. load btaudio, play with the settings, see if you can get it
to work. No? then line-in to a sound card. In any case, you have to set the
rec source correctly - which i admit is vaguely documented. But i have no
intentions of using Freevo to record -- except possibly with VDR, in
which case rec source will be a moot point anyway.

What I'm trying to say here is that the thing about linux in general and
freevo in particular is that you CAN make it work on just about any
hardware, given both the ability to read and follow instructions and the
ability to improvise and intuitively troubleshoot. By this i mean that you
must first analyze the failure mode, and then work at preventing it. Or
just route around it. Banging your head against a problem won't fix it.

Any hardware configuration is going to require some customization, even
if you think you have the exact same boards as the author you might have a
different ac97 codec chip on a sound board with the same name, for example.
And Hauppauge alone, has so many versions of the WinTV that it's nearly
impossible to find someone on the internet who has the same version you do
and is using the same software you want to use. And then there's the OTHER
brands of tv tuners.
