A much better solution would be to choose two or three readily available
universal remotes, design the interface & documentation for them, and sell
them via an Amazon associate program or the like. This eliminates the
financial risk, but still gives you the advantage a set "interface" on the
remote. The One-For-All remotes (such as
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000ALPBA) are consistently
highly rated.

Of course this means you are leaving it up to the end user to figure out how
to get the remote to talk to the computer. Another option, then, would be to
use a remoe like the StreamZap
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008XETO) or SnapStream
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002808S4). I have two
problems with these remotes, though. First, it's yet another remote. You'll
end up buying a universal remote to get back to one remote, defeating the
whole purpose. Second, I'm not terribly confident that either of these
options will be around a year from now. Not the end of the world, but not
good for standardization.

One final option is using a palm-os based remote. There are several programs
available, such as NoviiRemote (http://www.novii.tv/products/noviir/). This
would allow the interface to be exactly customized, and the geek factor is
good, but it's an expensive option. I'm also not sure how powerful the IR
transmitter in the typical Palm is. But if it works, it's a great option. An
open source version would be great, but I haven't been able to locate one.
