Try using the latest version of the ati drivers (8.10.19) and the latest
mplayer version (pre6a?).It could be a driver problem, or faulty hw. Does the 
card get hot when
this happens? Have you tried another disp mode in mplayer? (I used VESA
with my old ati card, and the util atitvout to activate tv-out).
