Your new TV should have either a dvi (hdmi) or vga input if you use
those (and your video card can  handle it) you can run at any
resolution (I'm using 1280x720).  But I have the same problem as you,
freevo is "streched" I was able to fix mplayer with -monitoraspect
16:9 and xine with -pfhq.  The reason you are having to set everything
to 4x3 is because your resolution is still 4x3.  Once you switch you a
wide screen resolution you'll be fine.
