hi Ben,

You are indeed correct. The binary version of freevo in the
debian/ubuntu archives is indeed compiled against python version 2.3 and
ubuntu installs with 2.4.
It is however very easy to install from source. If memory serves there
where only two dependencies i needed to satisfy (mmpython and mplayer).
you can apt-get mplayer or use the GUI synaptic to install it. once this
is done, the fun starts - you need to get the freevo sources...

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/freevo/freevo-1.5.4.tar.gz?use_mirror=kent

which you untar into a temporary location.

tar -zxf freevo-1.5.4.tar.gz

you then get the mmpython sources

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mmpython/mmpython-0.4.9.tar.gz?use_mirror=kent

same thing

tar -zxf mmpython-0.4.9.tar.gz

The whole of freevo is written in python (which is a thing of great
beauty) which means compilation is quite simple (compared to complicated
make scripts). Python has it's own installer called distutils which is a
typically cunning implementation. Whenever you need to compile something
pythonic, go to the root directory of the sources and find the setup.py
file. Now you run this command

cd /root_to_mmpython
python setup.py install

this will compile the sources and confirm all dependencies and install
the apps/library (usually somewhere
under /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages). Once this is successful do the
same on the freevo sources and you should achieve happiness.

No need to replace Breezy.

HTH, let me know how it goes

Brett
