Are you using OSS or ALSA, analogue or digital sound output.  I assume
you get sound when you play avi's and mpegs?  

Some tuners really suck and require you to put the sound into the input
of your soundcard, or require a bridge between the tv-card and the
soundcard internally.

You may also want to check that your mixer isnt muting something that it
shouldnt be.

If you are running freevo through X, then you could try running xterm
instead and open mplayer directly to tinker with settings.
