Fair question, but it seems I had done that.
I would guess that without it xine would fail.

SPRESSO freevo # which lsdvd
/usr/bin/lsdvd
SPRESSO freevo #

My urgent problems are now
1 my timezone which seems to think it is UTC, not UTC+10
2 how to get a recording command.
This box has a cx8800 card in it, and lsmod shows
cx8800 23436 1
v4l2_common 11264 3 saa7134,tuner,cx8800
compat_ioctl32 768 2 saa7134,cx8800
v4l1_compat 11140 2 saa7134,cx8800
cx88xx 45348 1 cx8800

(because when this goes well enough, i'm going to put the better saa7134 card
in it)

mencoder doesn't like me using v4l2 - says no driver for it.

this is working command form the other machine
but the new one doesn't accept v4l2 or v4l1
mencoder -tv driver=v4l2:chanlist=australia:volume=100:width=352:height=288
tv://28 -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3:vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=4000 -endpos
60 -noskip -o /tmp/record.avi

Again i have struck the problem with the stationlist.xml being overwritten and
the freevo calling tvtime on the wrong stations.
