Must admit I don't know what variants are used,for as I've never used

This would be incorrect especially if DVD_LANG_PREF is set, better to
use -aid 128, etc but you can select the language from the title sub
menu. mminfo will tell you the possible audio channels.

I can think of uses for variant maybe passing audio filter options to
mplayer, eg using -af pan or -af channels to convert stereo to six
channel audio or to play only the left or right channel from an audio
stream for bilingual audio.

It may also be possible to select a different angle from a dvd, these
are often use for different language menus.
