Ok, I'll try that, but this will only provide a workaround for the problem,
not a real solution, since mplayer is perfectly able to play video's full
screen in the standard vesa framebuffer.
Has anyone been able to solve this without switching to xine?

I had the same problem. I solved using fb xine instead of mplayer.
