I must second the general sentiment. I have not had a single positive experience with ATI cards under Linux. I would say that, by and large, your best overall bet would be had with nvidia, so long as you have no ideological objections to using their proprietary drivers. I personally am going the Intel route. dischi uses Intel as well and he's happy with it (though his tv is only native 768 lines).
