I don't know about HDTV support, but I have had success by completely 
avoiding ATI's proprietary drivers.  For TV out, use the vesa driver to 
enable the tv out, then use mplayer's vidix to display the video with 
acceleration.  For vga/dvi out, use the open source drivers with xv or 
vidix for mplayer.
