Mailing list are pretty much the for good FOSS projects. Especially
for projects like freevo which are not targeted at the Linux newbie.
Respones are generally faster and more reliable than on forums also.
Forums are also getting to be "old-fashion" they have been around
almost as long as mailing lists. IM's are where its at now :P

Forums also serve as a good "incubator" for Wiki content as can be seen at

Ubuntu has has surprisingly good luck in this area. Ubuntu has people
paid to maintain the site to cherry pick the best stuff for how-tos.
This makes using a forum as an adjunct to a wiki doable. In
non-commercailly backed products like Freevo that is really not as
vaiable a option.

Forums have historically made very little difference on number of
users. The real thing that increases users is people asking questions
and then actually getting answers, whether by forum,IRC or mailing
lists.
