For now, 1080p movies are not yet well managed on Linux system.
Have a glance to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html and search
for "2009-02-20, Friday :: Video Acceleration and You" news
If you gets one of the last video card generation , you may use vdpau
flag in order to tell mplayer to delegate the HD decoding to video card
and therefore playing 1080p movies will be possible
Otherwise, try to play only 720p movies.....
