Neeeever mind! Turns out I had unread messages before read ones and I thought I was up to date when really there were older ones (in this thread) that I hadn't read.
Sounds like I need to look into this LIRC_KEY_REPEAT config variable. It might be just what I'm looking for to slow down the repeat rate on the remote.
