we are suffering the same from a clean install (rpm plus pre-built skel) -
mysql is up and running and so is php4 but no database connect same error
when we try phpMyAdmin. It looks like mysql is not compiled into php - if we
put a phpinfo file (test.php) it shows configure command included --mysql
path=share..... but it does not show mysql 'enabled' in the list of
configured options below - which it should if configured in the module that
is loaded...

but we think we may be suffering from a permissions problem as it complains
about no 'mysql' user at vs reboot and so we have to start mysql manually
and we are still learning this thing :)
