Following a default installation of freeVSD a virtual server entry is added
into /etc/vsd/vsd.conf. This virtual server entry refers to the hosting
server itself - hence the 'self-hosting' term. The change is part of work
taking place to continue to simplify server management and certificate-based
authentication. The intention is to break-down the need for differentiating
between hosting server and virtual servers, instead to treat each as a VSD
server (a server on which VSD has been installed).
One of the nice features of the self-hosting is that following an
installation of freeVSD you can remotely manage your server using existing
VSD tools, without any further configuration being required.
Take an existing server, managing web-hosting, mail etc. and install
freeVSD.
Point an instance of VSDControl (Windows-based management interface) at the
server.
Hey-presto, Windows-based management of your linux servers (and virtual
linux servers) from the desktop.
Manage your Apache/Sendmail/user configuration via a secure SSL
encrypted/authenticated connection at your leisure (and gasp at the instant
repsonse times it provides compared to web-based admin).
Equally, other interfaces to freeVSD (command-line/web-admin) can be used to
manage the server just as they could be used to manage a virtual server...
The self-hosting was also a necessary step in the work we are completing on
delegating configuration management down to the domain level. This will
allow ISPs or resellers to issue tools to a domain owner to securely manage
their own mail accounts/web content. Beyond this, work to delegate limited
configuration control all the way down to individual users
(mail-forwarding/auto-responders) is also well underway...
