if it does...
what are the permissions for /var/lib/mysql ? (needs to be at leas 711
drwx--x--x )
did you try logged in the VS (in the shell):
mysql -h localhost -u root -p
(and then enter passwd)
and if that fails
mysql -h localhost -u root
(there is no passwd here)
