In answer to my own question -- a dejanews search of comp.os.linux revealed

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/tips/ThunderBird-Duron.html

In less than a second -- just have to dig in the right places, I guess.

Anyway, from the boot prompt: it is: linux x86_serial_nr=1 to get in the
first time,
and then edit /etc/lilo.conf, referencing the above URL for accuracy..

Update the kernel, and the problem goes away.. But, to get going in 6.2
with an Athlon, this is necessary, prior to the upgrade..
