The good thing about ProFTPD has been the lack of security issues,
hence you don't have to go through the hassles of re-patching every
few weeks.

4. To chroot a user, you needed bin, lib, pub and etc directories,
with a copy of the C library and a few binaries. A real pain
in the arse ! ProFTPDs solution is much cleaner.

Exactly.

Similarily the user utils {user, group}{add, mod, del} were re-written
for FreeVSD so that we had tight integration between the tools and
the environment. The early work used to patch shadow-utils, but
this proved to be unmanageable.
