You might find that Idaya's reluctance to incorporate changes from the
community could be due to an argument that I put to them in the past.

The copyright issues surrounding a project are of great concern to me. I
think that these should be cleared up early within the existence of a
project. If I was still in control of VSD, then for me to accept patches
from the community, I would first require an Assignment of Past and Future
Changes to be completed. As I feel that to truly benefit from Free
Software, then all issues surrounding its Freeness should be cleared up.

I think this gets a bit tricky when a profit making organisation owns the
source code to the project, since you are forced to sign copyright over
to that company. I think many people are reluctant, as am I, to do this.

The best solution is to sign the whole project over to the Free Software
Foundation, since that marries well with the GNU Public License. They
also require the Copyright Assignment document, but at least people will
be much more likely to do it that way.

Oh and remember, there is a difference between Open Source Software and
Free Software. I personally follow the Free Software crowd since this is
something I have been involved in for many years.

Regards,

Nick.
