I'm assuming the errors are originating on the host server? Can you post the results of the following command (run on the hosting server)
cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max On our biggest box, we've got 48 VS's on a single machine (and growing). We had to tweak this setting around 35 VS's or so. (This is on a 1Ghz machine with 2GB RAM).
