I've solved it...

# tail /var/log/messages
Sep 11 17:49:41 ned bevs: vsd.conf: <Default>: invalid number of args `StartUID'

Upon checking closely, it appeared that I had a space after the 1200
in "StartUID 1200" in vsd.conf.  Once removed, all works fine once
more.
