The bin directory should always only contain one file so that the user
know which file to flash.

What about failsafe mode? The ip is always the same.
Then use
mtd -e linux -e fwcf -r write
freewrt-asus-wl500g-premium-brcm-2.4-squashfs-overlay.bin linux
and everything is fine. Data and fwcf is cleaned.
You can always use failsafe and mtd.
A better idea might be to add an option to the menu, where the user
can select if he wants to erase fwcf on first bootup. In this case
you would need to add some shell logic to firstboot.
