I had pretty much the same problem as you (and we're using the same box too).

I chose this method. I am running busybox's httpd with CGI support and I wrote 
a simple shell script for mounting and unmounting partitions and halting the 
system. You can configure httpd to run as root (not very nice, but works).

You could use a USB2Serial Adaptor for this. I am using a cheap one with a 
PL2302 chip - drivers for this chip can be compiled into FreeWRT. I am 
planning to use it for my LIRC IR dongle ;). There is no need to solder 
anything onto the box (yeah, you still need to care about the actual button 
and a driver/deamon).

Also sounds nice - this would be a pretty clean solution, but it is sort of 
hard to reach these buttons.

If someone has experiences with the last two options I would be very 
interested as well.
