Everyone knows that the rail companies aren't into railways. Many of them
are property developers. The railway is simply a distraction from their core
business of extracting profit from the prime location of their largest
assets. Just think of all the main line stations smack in the middle of the
largest (and smallest) cities in the country. The only reason they keep the
railways is because the government would (probably) refuse to give the
massive subsidies they currently receive.

After all, they are businesses whose sole aim must be to extract as much
value as possible for shareholders, on penalty of law. They have no other
choice!
