Well said Steve, and I largely agree with most of your post in
general. Finding *just the right* amount of structure will be key
(I'm reminded of life existing at the "edge of chaos" principle).
I'd add to your three "contributions" below that a well-crafted
mission statement will help guide things on a more substantive
level. At the Bar Camp discussion of organizational structure, Steve
made reference to educational outreach and public policy components
of the mission. Is there an articulated statement? Maybe it's
already up on the site and I just haven't seen it...

Each of us, when we establish a project in the space, should be
contributing in at least three ways:
1) Financial support. We pay some rent/subscription which feeds
the mundane expenses of establishing and maintaining infrastructure
(space, utilities, network, printers, projectors, etc.)
2) Patina. Our use of the facility should leave behind a
"patina", the physical and logical space of the Complex should be
the better for our having been there. Even if we leave the space
and do not return, there will be residues and artifacts of our
having been there which will contribute to a sort of "patina" that
cannot be designed in.
3) Externalities. Each of our projects will lead to external
interfaces and collaborations which will presumably add quality and
opportunity to the commons. Visiting patrons, customers,
collaborators will observe the other work ongoing in the space and
be inspired to engage with them directly or by referring their
peers to us.
