Rich: I commend your willingness to "put yourself out there" Friam "might be" too wide of a net. The Wiki may turn out to be a better place for this, but for the moment, stimulating conversation and ideas in this arena seems good. Roy: I think your caveat "I'm just one guy" and the idea that "a pattern will emerge" is a good one. I like your Alexandrian "Pattern-Language-esque" mode of describing your observations. Doug: There is no doubt that the sfComplex is not going to make rent selling Cappuccinos (Or T-shirts or ...) in any quantity, the question is whether such adds a important/valuable texture to the space... can a small coffee bar pay for it's own space/upkeep/staffing and does it add or detract from everything going on at the Complex. <my $.02> WiFi Cafe: I am promoting a "Reading Room" which would work well juxtaposed with some form of Coffee Bar/WiFi cafe which may or may not be open (or advertised) to the public. In that space, tables and chairs and even a sofa or two might play well. It could be a very well spent 400 square feet. *this* is the main destination for many "Laptop Subscription Members" if that model succeeds. *This* is a good part of what they are paying for... an alternative to a Starbucks or Borders (or even Aztec in some cases). Art Gallery: I am also promoting the complex doubling as an art-space... to attract a different kind of attention, hopefully complimentary to the core mission(s). Collaborative Meditations: If we do this right, this will be the natural state all of the time... but it wouldn't be obvious to anyone watching. Toxins du Jour: I'm sure there will be plenty of Caffiene consumption with or without a formal Coffee shop/bar. Any other toxins will probably be either incidental (breathing solder/flux fumes) or discreet (don't ask) or twenty feet from any entrance (nicotine).Vegan diet: Non-Sequitor?Dance: Maybe a few special events? Eckhart Tolle: L. Ron Hubbard, Ayn Rand, Bob Dylan, Timothy Leary, Art Bell, Nostradamus, Socrates, Noah,</ my $.02> - Steve Rich: I'm going to jump in here with my reactions to what I think fits at sfComplex. I'm just one guy, and I'm relying on the idea that a pattern will emerge from all of us.The things I think are a good fit are: warm, easy, welcoming, social atmosphere world Net democracy novel astrophysics in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Fresh art gallery, especially on the walls The things I don't think fit are coffee shop/wifi open to the general public mirror, desk, couch, donation jar collaborative meditative explorations, vegan diet and toxins de jour Eckhart Tolle webcast Dance night I'm happy to share my reasoning on this, but for now will leave it open to other people's comments. I'd also like to see if Friam list serve is the right place for the discussion. Adjacent to it, I'd like to set up a mirror, desk, couch, and public access PC laptop (one of my spares), with a donation jar, and be available many lunchtimes and afternoons weekly, playing at my current explorations: world Net democracy, novel astrophysics in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, collaborative meditative explorations, vegan diet and toxins de jour. I'd like to MC the remarkable 2-hour free "Net event" of Eckart Tolle with Oprah Winfrey, Monday nights, shared on a large projection screen. Another night could be Dance Free, along with Music Free jamming, donations accepted. ditto Theater Free. Impro, impro, impro. Fresh art gallery, especially on the walls, SFC takes 25% commission. !!!!!!?????
