The prosecutor of the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925 was William Jennings Bryan, three-time Democratic Party nominee for President and Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. In your lifetime, Doug, the Republicans have attracted fundamentalists, but before the Democratic party change in the sixties, the Democrats were the fundamentalists. Common factors are the American South and populism.
