I am amazed that the total extraction is only 85,000 tons/year now. If all vehicular transportation does go Li or Li-ion battery-based, we really should be planning for all this to be integrated with demand-buffering of the grid. No reason to build a completely separate parallel buffer bank using more Li while cars sit with batteries holding charge as if it were gasoline, waiting for the next drive. People will balk because this kind of cooperative paradigm is something they are programmed to reject anywhere they notice it. But it has enabled the eusocial insects to survive for a lot longer than humans have, so we should assume it will be necessary and adopt as another project how to get people used to that fact.
